The total amount of Bitcoin in circulation (BTC) has reached an important milestone. Today 90% of the maximum total supply was mined.
BlockchainCom’s current data shows that there were 18.899 million bitcoins in circulation as of Monday. This means that only 10% of the total supply of the coin remains to be mined. While it took about 12 years to mine the first 90% of BTC, this 10% will take a little longer.
Bitcoin has a limited supply of 21 million coins set by its anonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. This limitation is written in the source code of the asset and is enforced by the network nodes. This limitation is critical to its value proposition as a currency and investment vehicle.
It will take 119 years to complete the bitcoin mining process, as the rate of production of new coins is halved every four years.
